SEO in 2026: How to Get Cited by AI Search, Not Just Ranked

AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity now answer before anyone clicks. Here's how we're adapting SEO so brands show up inside the answer — not three scrolls below it.

For fifteen years, SEO had one scoreboard: where you ranked on a page of ten blue links. That scoreboard still exists, but it's no longer the whole game. A growing share of searches now end with an AI-generated answer — in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, in ChatGPT, in Perplexity, in Gemini — and the brands named inside that answer win attention the rest never see.

The industry has started calling this generative engine optimisation, or GEO. We think the label matters less than the shift underneath it: search engines are moving from retrieving pages to synthesising answers. Your content now has two audiences — people and the models that summarise for them.

What AI answers actually pull from

Answer engines favour sources that are easy to quote with confidence. In our audits, the pages that get cited tend to share the same traits, regardless of industry.

  • A direct answer in the first two or three sentences, before any preamble
  • Clear headings phrased the way people actually ask questions
  • Specific, checkable facts — numbers, definitions, steps — rather than vague claims
  • Visible expertise: named authors, real credentials, original data or first-hand experience
  • Consistent information about the brand across its site, Google Business Profile, directories and reviews

The technical basics matter more, not less

If a crawler can't reliably read a page, no model will cite it. Server-rendered HTML, fast load times, clean internal linking and accurate structured data (Organization, Product, FAQ, Article, LocalBusiness) remain the foundation. Check that your robots.txt isn't unintentionally blocking the AI crawlers you actually want to be visible to — and make that an explicit business decision rather than a default.

Measure visibility, not just traffic

Click-through from AI answers is lower than from classic results, so organic sessions can dip even as brand visibility grows. We now track a few extra signals alongside rankings: how often the brand is mentioned or cited for its priority questions across the major AI assistants, branded search volume, and direct and referral traffic from AI tools. Together they tell a truer story than sessions alone.

Where to start this quarter

  • List the 30–50 questions your buyers ask before they purchase, and check who the AI answers cite today
  • Rewrite your most important pages to answer those questions plainly, near the top
  • Add or fix structured data and author information on key pages
  • Clean up inconsistent business details across listings and review platforms
  • Publish something only you can — original data, case results, expert opinion

SEO isn't dead. It's being asked to earn trust from a new kind of reader. The brands that treat AI visibility as part of search strategy now will be the default answer in their category by the time competitors notice.
