Agentic AI in Marketing Ops: What to Automate and What to Keep Human

AI agents can now run multi-step tasks — pulling reports, drafting briefs, routing leads. A grounded look at where they save real time and where they need a human in the loop.

The first wave of generative AI in marketing was about single prompts: write a caption, summarise a document, draft an email. The current wave is about agents — systems that can plan and carry out several steps, use tools, and hand results back. Instead of asking for a report summary, you can ask an agent to pull the numbers, compare them with last month, flag anomalies and draft the update.

We've been piloting agents across our own operations and client accounts. Some tasks transformed overnight. Others looked impressive in a demo and quietly created more work.

Where agents earn their keep

  • Reporting: gathering data from ad platforms, analytics and CRM into a first-draft weekly summary
  • Research: competitor scans, review mining and first-pass audience insight
  • Lead handling: enriching, scoring and routing enquiries to the right person quickly
  • Content operations: resizing, tagging, repurposing and checking assets against brand rules
  • QA: spotting broken links, missing tracking and tagging errors before launch

Where humans stay in charge

Anything involving judgement, accountability or reputation needs a person signing off: strategy and positioning, final creative, budget changes above an agreed limit, client communication, and any claim that goes public. Agents are confident even when they're wrong. The cost of a subtle error in a board report or an ad claim is far higher than the time saved.

How to roll agents out safely

  • Start with low-risk, repetitive, measurable tasks and define what 'done correctly' means
  • Give agents the minimum access they need — read-only first, write access only with review
  • Keep logs of what the agent did and why, so errors can be traced
  • Never feed confidential client or personal data into tools without clear data-handling terms
  • Measure time saved and error rates, and retire workflows that don't pay back

The goal isn't a marketing team replaced by agents. It's a team freed from busywork to spend more time on the thinking, creativity and client relationships that machines can't do.
